This year again we welcome the Tour of Britain to our region – the last time was in 2016 – but has been a regular fixture on the route of Britain’s most prestigious cycle race, having hosted stages on nine previous occasions, with winners including Mark Cavendish (2011 and 2012), Edvald Boasson Hagen (2008 and 2009) and Elia Viviani (2015).
MOUNTAIN BIKING
The 7stanes are world-class mountain biking centres that span the south of Scotland. Their award-winning trails offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and attract riders from all over the UK and beyond.
At nearby Keir Mill, cyclists can see the former smithy where Kirkpatrick McMillan invented the pedal cycle in 1840. You can also see a replica at the Scottish Cycle museum at nearby Drumlanrig Castle which continues to develop their own outstanding mountain bike trails.
